Rude Awakening for Middletown HS North Sophomores

Middletown High School North will be getting a Rude Awakening when the the anti-drug and alcohol program visits the school today, specifically targeting sophomores.

Rude Awakening uses a three-pronged approach to drive the point home: misusing drugs and alcohol can alter a student's life in a tragic way.

Hands-on activities that make use of DWI Fatal Vision goggles while operating golf carts give students an understanding of how it feels to drive drunk. An assembly program outlines what really happens in a car crash, the hospital, the court room and how a DWI conviction can haunt offenders for a lifetime.

Students then witness a live demonstration of response to an accident, program coordinator Nick Caprio said. During this outdoor demonstration, students portray victims while Middletown police, fire, first aid and paramedics respond to the mock accident.

Rescuers extricate the victims from the car using the Jaws of Life, followed by mock triage and transportation to an area hospital. Different accident scenarios are demonstrated at each location during the program's tour.
