Expanded River Plaza Parking Expected to Alleviate Congestion

But more spaces won't solve parking problems at the school

Additional parking spaces at River Plaza Elementary School are expected to alleviate congestion, though administrators noted adding more spots won’t solve the school’s parking issues.

Room for an additional 22 vehicles is being added to the 40-space parking lot at the school at a cost of $21,500, according to school administrators.

“It’s a significant improvement of what’s there currently,” Superintendent William George said at a board of education meeting last month.

The additional spaces should make the parking lot safer and reduce some need for street parking, according to the board.

“This is something that really, really needs to get done,” said board Vice President Joan Minnuies at the time.

The 22 additional spaces should be added during days in November when the school is closed, said Principal Kim Pickus. That’s the maximum amount of extra parking that the school can accommodate.

“Less care will have to park on the other side of the street,” George said, though he noted that it will not alleviate all problems with parking at the school.
