High Technology High School, in the Lincroft section of Middletown, has been named the best-performing high school in math and science in the country, according to U.S.News & World Report's new rankings of Best High Schools for Math and Science.

Nearly 100 percent of High Tech's students will graduate with AP credit, with an average of four AP exams per graduate. Students averaged a 2149 out of 2400 on their SATs and every student moved on to a four-year college, according to Monmouth County Vocational School District Superintendent Tim McCorkell.

High Technology High School is a pre-engineering career academy that emphasizes the interconnections among mathematics, science, technology and the humanities, prepares students to become creative problem solvers, effective communicators, and tomorrow's leaders through a rigorous, specialized curriculum and collaborative partnerships, according to Monmouth County Vocational School District Superintendent Tim McCorkell.

Its students come from about 50 feeder districts in Monmouth County, where over 300 students each year compete for some 75 spots based on students' middle school grades and scores on an entrance exam, he said.

While Principal Daniel D. Simon and McCorkell recognize that their students are gifted, they say schools like High Tech are needed to challenge students this motivated. "The students have very strong skills before they come in the door," McCorkell said. "High Tech is a school that focuses on one thing and does it well."

Through a partnership with Project Lead the Way and the Rochester Institute of Technology, many students earn college credits through their standard engineering coursework, McCorkell said. Additional credits may be earned at Brookdale Community College in Sustainable Energy, CADD, or Computer Programming, he added.
