Comedy Tonight: 'Forum' at HS North

The high school's spring musical features a cast of 31

It’s comedy, music and a good kind of mayhem that are expected to ensue at tonight when the curtain goes up at 7 pm. on the school’s production of the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

The show, which will run through Saturday at North’s Tindall Road theater, is a classic slapstick farce with the book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

Inspired by the works of Plautus, an ancient Roman playwright, the musical kick-back in time takes the audience on the comical journey of a slave named Pseudolus and his antics in trying to win the freedom and favor of his master by helping him get the girl of his dreams.

The original Tony Award-winning Broadway show, known for the signature song “Comedy Tonight,” premiered in 1962 and starred Zero Mostel, who became iconic for his role as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

North’s production of Forum features a cast of 31, with a tech crew of 25 and 12 in the orchestra.

Patrice Thornton is the director and Peter Isherwood is musical director, with tech direction and design by Gery Mahoney and choreography by Tara Mahoney.

Some of the lead roles in the show are: Derek Carper as Pseudolus, Palino Talbot as Senex, Meghan Mahoney as Domina, Mike Gwiazdowski as Hero and John Farella as Hysterium.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors. The show curtain time is 7 p.m. for all three nights, March 29, 30 and 31.
