Middletown Students Soak In Knowledge During Summer Enrichment Program

Middletown students write, type, count and read the summer away during the Middletown School District's summer enrichment program.

While some students are out on the beach, others are hitting the books in Middletown’s first and free summer enrichment program.

Now in its third week, Middletown students from both public and private schools overcome the summer slump in an hour and a half enrichment program Monday through Thursday throughout the month of July and August.

Students, who completed grades kindergarten through 8th, engage in science, math, and language arts programs at both and Leonardo Elementary School in classrooms with 20 students or less.

While high school students work on HSPA prep, SAT prep and college application and scholarship essay writing in the second floor of Bayshore Middle School.

Students from Middletown High School North and Middletown High School South are also volunteering to help educators with some of the elementary school courses to fill service hours and certified teachers teach all the programs, said Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Jill A. Takacs.

There are about 3,500 to 4,000 placements in the enrichment program but the number of students in the program was not available, Takacs said.

“For example students taking multiple Advance Placement classes could be enrolled in more than one enrichment program,” she said.

This year’s program is completely full, she said.

“We were able to accommodate all students who applied to the program by the May 9th deadline and placed them into at least one program,” Takacs said.

Takacs said next summer she hopes to expand the program allowing for more students to be enrolled.

The No Child Left Behind grant and the Middletown School Board fund the program.
