Wednesday: School Board Votes on Budget, Football Coach Post

The tax levy will rise 1 percent under the Middletown Board of Education's proposed 2013-2014 budget. A Head Football Coach for HS North has been identified.

Update March 21: The budget proposal and the coaching appointment were approved by the school board.

The 9-member school board will hear public comments on its proposed $147,856,250 budget, which calls for a 1% increase in the tax levy.

The proposed 2013-14 budget tax levy is $126,254,312, up $1,250,042 from the year before.

The school board estimates that the tax impact would be $53.24 more annually in school taxes for the owner of a house assessed at $375,000, the township's average.  Details about the tentative budget and proposed initiatives that were introduced Feb. 27 are posted on the district website.

The board is also expected to vote on the appointment of a new head football coach for Middletown High School North Lions, following the resignation of Joe Trezza after 7 years. Stephen Bush is being considered for the position, which pays $7,692.

According to Scott Stump's AllShoreMedia website, Bush is a former Miami Dolphins assistant and Manalapan head coach who led Manalapan to three Class A North titles and three state playoff appearances between 1993-99.

HI, I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN AND I THINK THAT ALMOST $4000. A YEAR IS ENOUGH FOR THE SCHOOL TAXES I PAY. THAT IS 60% OF THE DISTRIBTION OF MY TAXES. WHEN IS THIS GOING TO STOP. SENIOR CITIZENS OVER 65 SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE TO PAY SUCH A HIGH PERCENTAGE FOR SCHOOL TAXES.

How about a zero percent increase in the school tax levy!

Elaine,
Neither should people who never had kids.

Improvements cost money. Education costs money. I guess if you don't want to have a town that has an excellent education system you can certainly move. However, I am sure if you had children in the system it would be a different story.

Young couples look for areas that have a good school systems. They will pay more for homes in those areas, that is why you want good schools, if you have children in them or not. The value of you home is based on the schools in your area !!!

with all do respect thats a poor way to view it I pay 4 more than u in property taxes and I will guess 10x or more in federal/state/income tax for a lot of things like social security medicaid and 100 other things i dont use either ur point is childish and ignorant
commonman March 21, 2013 at 05:07 pm

COMMONMAN, I SAID I PAY $4000.00 IN SCHOOL TAXES NOT PROPERTY TAXES. ALSO MAYBE YOU SHOULD USE THE EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR YOURSELF. THANKYOU FOR PAYING MY SOCIAL SECURITY. BUT I ALSO WORKED FOR FORTY YEARS. SO I GUESS I AM PAYING FOR MY OWN SOCIAL SECURITY. ALSO YOUR NAME SHOULD BE RICHMAN NOT COMMONMAN

That is a ridiculous statement. They are your future leaders...don't you want them to get the best eduction they can?
Jesse March 25, 2013 at 10:03 pm
Alicia, Other states have managed to educate our future leaders just fine without using 60 percent of the property tax bill to do so. NJ needs to find another way to fund its schools.
