Bishop: Why Trinity Hall All-Girls HS Cannot Call Itself 'A Catholic School'

Trinity Hall describes itself as a school "in the Catholic tradition." The bishop of Trenton explains why.

Trinity Hall, the first all-girls high school in the region, is set to open in Middletown this fall. Its glossy brochures describe it as a school "in the Catholic tradition."

To be called a "Catholic school" is actually a phrase that is subject to requirements under Canon Law, said Bishop David M. O’Connell of the Diocese of Trenton. And while the senior member of the clergy in the position of authority and oversight of Catholics in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean offers no "ill will" to the Trinity Hall founders, he says he is unable to give his consent and permission for the usage of the phrase.

In the message emailed to members of the diocese and posted to the DOT website and circulating in parish bulletins this week, the bishop offers the explanation for his decision.  (See below.)

Sean Clifford, Chair of Trinity Hall’s Board of Trustees, said in a written statement, “Trinity Hall is proud to be an independent all-girls high school and looks forward to educating and empowering young women in the Catholic tradition. Our mission statement is very clear and can be found at www.trinityhallnj.org We thank the Bishop for the recognition and wish him and all of the Diocesan schools the very best.”

A STATEMENT OF BISHOP DAVID M. O’CONNELL, C.M. OF THE DIOCESE OF TRENTON REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF TRINITY HALL, AN ALL-GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL IN MONMOUTH COUNTY

I was approached early in my tenure as Diocesan Bishop to give permission to build an "all-girls Catholic High School" in Monmouth County. This was not the first time such a request was made of the Diocese although it was the first time I was asked.

After multiple conversations with those parties interested and very broad consultation among the principals, pastors and others concerned with Catholic education in the Diocese, I invited the interested parties to conduct a feasibility study which I then shared and discussed with those I had previously consulted. That the school be "Catholic" was not high on the list of priorities of those who responded in the survey and did not seem to be a compelling factor in its establishment. That such a school would harm enrollment in currently existing Catholic schools was a concern of mine.

The Canon Law of the Catholic Church requires the consent of the "competent ecclesiastical authority (that is, the Diocesan Bishop)" for a school to bear the title "Catholic school." I did not give such consent or permission and so informed those interested in establishing the school. I was told by numerous individuals within the Diocese that those seeking to establish this new school were going to do so regardless of my consent or permission. And so they have.

The school’s founders are using the expression "in the Catholic tradition" to describe Trinity Hall. That is not the same thing as being a "Catholic school" and I simply want to make clear that this new institution is not affiliated with the Diocese of Trenton or our Office of Catholic Education.

I have been directly involved in works of Catholic education all my life as a priest. That individuals have the freedom to establish a school of whatever kind is not something that I question. People have that right and I bear them no ill will. That they call it "Catholic," however, is subject to my consent according to Church Law and I have not given it. Catholics in the Diocese have the right to know that and I have the responsibility to tell them.

Hey Bishop, want to push Catholics into the arms of accepting Protestant denominations? Your arrogance just might do that.
Jeff January 29, 2013 at 01:31 am
Is this the same bishop who closed the "Catholic" schools in Hazlet, Keansburg and Keyport, rather than combine them into one with a feasible student body?
Mick Foley January 29, 2013 at 02:11 am
That is because there clearly are no proven benefits. Most of the research shows there is little or no benefit.
Mick Foley January 29, 2013 at 02:13 am
Religion is an anachronism. In one more generation there will be no priests left. Only the uneducated would believe in santa clause, the easter bunny or the man in the sky.
You go girl January 29, 2013 at 03:35 am
Only the uneducated would associate santa claus, the easter bunny or the man in the sky, whoever that is, with religion. Santa Claus and the easter bunny are secular concepts. Jesus is the center of our Catholic faith and the source of our redemption. Pray for faith Mick Foley.
I'm very happy that Trinity Hall is becomming a reality and that young women will have the opportunity to experience the type of education I had at Marylawn, an all girl school "in the Catholic tradition".
Jackie Schnebly January 29, 2013 at 03:46 am
The bishop is 100% correct. It sounds like some well to do brats thought they could ride roughshod over the Catholic Church by using its name to drum up business. Guess what? You need permission. Also, go ahead and keep trying to spoof people by dropping the Rumson name on your Middletown spoiled girls school. You'll get no support. We see right through you.
NJarhead January 29, 2013 at 01:40 pm
While I believe the Catholic Church to be about business first and faith second, I think your comments are childish and ignorant Mick Foley. You are free to believe what you want, no matter how uninformed, new wave or immature. But what you are talking about is a faith. Do yourself a favor and learn the definition of that word and perhaps you will understand why it's existed over 2000 years and why it will continue to exist as long as man walks the Earth.
JasperRam January 29, 2013 at 02:14 pm
This is standard practice among the clergy of the 'established' church. In Middlesex County when they built DIOCESAN schools (Ahr/St. Thomas and Pius) they did everything they could to destroy the existing, very effective catholic school, St. Joe's.
Mick Foley January 29, 2013 at 03:17 pm
thanks jarhead. I am glad you showed how ignorant you are in your own post. Have fun praying to the sungod for some nice weather this weekend and dont forget to pray to the wizard of oz for a brain!
Mick Foley January 29, 2013 at 03:18 pm
It is interesting that they keep talking about rumson all the time. In the first advertisements that the patch ran as news articles they kept talking about cryodon hall like it was some kind of resort! The place is a dump.

Both the Bishop and Trinity Hall have the right to make the decisions they made. We need to move on. I am very happy that the need for a single-sex school for girls has come to fruition. Having graduated from single sex high school myself, I can appreciate the confidence and leadership skills my high school instilled in me and I want the same opportunity for my daughter. Go Trinity!!!
norman mcmanus January 29, 2013 at 04:28 pm
the bishop is the head of the Catholic church in trinity hall's area and only he can decide what is a Catholic school,as it should be.trinity should advertise itself as private or maybe christian, but they have no right or authority to call themselves Catholic anymore than to call themselves muslim.those who do not agree with this chain of command are free to become protesant and to those we bear no ill will..
NJarhead January 29, 2013 at 04:34 pm
And I hope you find happiness and fulfillment in science and technology. Must be difficult being so more intelligent than everyone else in, not only, your own generation, but the hundreds that came before you. I'll bet your parents are so proud.
Mick Foley January 29, 2013 at 05:06 pm
No educated people pray to the man in the sky that delivered his rules of life on a pizza box. Clearly all educated people who can understand basic science realize that it was a story created to control and appease the 99%ers. Why would you live your life as a slave if there was no "eternal" reward in the "after life" No different than your friends in the desertstan and their 99 virgins.
rosemary conte January 29, 2013 at 05:39 pm
Leave it to the Catholic Church to always find a way to cover up what's really going on!
Parent of future Trinity Haller January 29, 2013 at 06:06 pm
And they are much better off for that independence!!!! This catholic is relieved it will not be affiliated with the Diocese and maybe their future endowment will rival CBA's.!!!!!
Mick Foley January 29, 2013 at 07:06 pm
And what is really going on woodward?
whosthis January 29, 2013 at 07:20 pm
That is a narrow-minded and bigoted statement - an ad hominen attack born of your prejudice. You offer no proof for asserting that the Church "always find(s) a way to cover up what's really going on."
You are certainly entitled to your opinion about an institution, but snark belittles you, not your target.
MonCoMom January 29, 2013 at 07:50 pm
Honestly, I think Trinity Hall would benefit from describing itself as Christian instead of Catholic anyway. It would appeal to a broader student base. That being said I totally support Trinity Hall's efforts to bring an additional educational opportunity to this area for our daughters. Go Trinity Hall!
Peter Koenig January 29, 2013 at 08:54 pm
If I may: "Catholic" means "universal." With due respect, the Roman Catholic Church is not the only Christian denomination. "Catholic" is also a part of the Nicene Creed - "one holy catholic [or Catholic] and apostolic Church" - as the Creed is recognized by that vast majority of Christian denominations. Martin Luther suggested that so-called Protestants call themselves "Evangelical Catholics" - the name "Lutheran" wasn't generally used in his lifetime, and he'd have objected strongly if it had been. My point is that the Roman Catholic bishop was correct in explaining that the school isn't affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church - but (I hope) he didn't say he has a copyright on "Catholic."
Peter Koenig January 29, 2013 at 08:57 pm
No ill will here either, but Roman Catholic isn't the only kind of Catholic. As a Lutheran, I call myself a Catholic every Sunday when I recite the Nicene Creed.
Middletown resident January 30, 2013 at 01:14 pm
I have been to numerous Trinity Hall meetings over the past year and they have never once said it was a "Catholic School". I wasnt aware that the Bishop and or Catholic church had a copy right on the work "Catholic". "Catholic values and traditions" does not say a Catholic School. As a Roman Catholic I was very excited that the Bishop didnt approve of the school this way they dont have to conform to their rules. Trinity Hall will be as successful as CBA which is also not part of the Diocese. Now there is an equal superior playing field for our young woman! GO TRINITY!
Adolfo Surez January 30, 2013 at 02:44 pm
Hopefully you will not be teaching there with your "equal superior" writing skills. And yes, the catholic church does own the trademark catholic. Jesus had Peter file the paperwork about 2,000 years ago.
jersey shore friar January 30, 2013 at 07:43 pm
yes,but that would be catholic not Catholic, anyway we know the deception trinity is attempting.
jersey shore friar January 30, 2013 at 07:47 pm
CBA is a Catholic Christian Brothers school and is approved by the Bishop.it is just not Dioceson.
Richard Koping January 30, 2013 at 08:34 pm
Unless the name of the school is Trinity Hall Catholic, I do not think the Bishop has any say in the matter. They can provide a catholic (universal) or christian education is they so wish.
jersey shore friar January 30, 2013 at 09:05 pm
the bishop's say is to publically respond to inquiry about the matter and clarify the church's position.other than that the bishop as wished them well.
jersey shore friar January 30, 2013 at 09:07 pm
he gave it to peter, the first pope.
Liz Niederberger February 3, 2013 at 07:49 pm
No, this bishop has not closed any schools.
Ramblin' Rose March 24, 2013 at 08:01 pm
I don't believe Trinity School will take from the current Catholic Schools...we have CBA for boys, RBC for both boys and girls and Trinity will be for girls whose families prefer an all girl environment. Where is the problem?
