Local Teacher Heads to Matawan as New Athletic Director

The Matawan Huskies will soon be under the administration of a new athletic director from Middletown.

The Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education voted Monday to appoint Philip Tyburczy as an assistant principal at the Matawan who will oversee the athletics department, according to Board President Charles Kenny.

The job was previously held by Joseph Martucci, who is leaving the district to be an assistant football coach at Kean University. Martucci also coached the Huskies football team for nearly 30 years, however Tyburczy will not coach football. Matawan's baseball coach, John Kaye, was appointed to lead the team this fall.

Tyburczy played football for four years at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, where he graduated in 1997 will a bachelor of arts in history, Kenny said. He went on to earn a masters in education with a concentration in administration from St. Peter's College.

He worked as the director of athletics at Marist High School before accepting a teaching position at Middletown South in 2005, where he is also the assistant football coach.

Kenny said the board unanimously selected Tyburczy during an executive session at the June 25 regular action meeting.

"He appeared to be a strong leader and held strong educational beliefs. He is focused on the advancement of the students' growth in not only athletics but also academics," Kenny said.

Tyburczy is set to begin in August, however according to Kenny he may start earlier if possible.
