Pallone Positions Himself As A 'Regular Joe' In New Ad

Pallone touts progressive record, compares himself to late Sen. Frank Lautenberg in new ad.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) released his first Internet ad Thursday in a bid for a U.S. Senate seat, touting himself as a New Jersey everyman in the mold of late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

"A Typical Jersey Story," opens with Pallone driving a modest Chevrolet sedan southerly on the Garden State Parkway -- sleeves rolled up -- talking about growing up in Long Branch, the son of a police officer.

Supporters in the two-minute ad say that Pallone is "just a regular Joe,’" who "gets things done," and the spot highlights the Congressman’s work on the Affordable Care Act, to pass an increase in college loans and grants and his more well-known environmental work for Shore Area beaches.

Pallone is seen juxtaposed to an image of Lautenberg, along with an overlay of a newspaper headline announcing the Lautenberg family’s endorsement on Monday of Pallone over Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

Pallone praises Lautenberg as a "work horse" who shunned the spotlight, an allusion to the Lautenberg family endorsement which called Booker, who leads Pallone by more than 40 percentage points in the latest polling, a "show horse."

"I want to get things done," Pallone says. "And make a difference in people’s lives."

Pallone is vying for the Democratic nomination to run for the late Lautenberg's Senate seat against Booker, U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-12) and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-34).

The winner of the Aug. 13 special primary election will face either Steve Lonegan, former Bogota mayor, or Alieta Eck in the Oct. 16 special general election.
