Sears Roebuck & Company is one of the oldest retail establishments in the nation. Sears, as it is now known, was founded in 1893 by Richard W Sears and Alvah Roebuck. Mr. Sears, a watchmaker, had owned the Sears Watch Co in 1886. Mr. Roebuck  of Indiana was his first employee. Seven years later, the two men forged a partnership, and in 1893 the first Sears Roebuck store opened in Chicago, Illinois. The Middletown store has been on State Road 35 for 30 years.
