My son was a student of Takemusu. The reason I state was is because he is also a drummer in a band, takes drum lessons and even made it into the Rockit program at Count Basie. As his other interest took off, we found we did not have enough time for him to continue his lessons. When he as there, he loved it. As well as learning Karate, he gained confidence in himself which carried over into is drumming. He may not have been in the class long, but it made a good lasting difference in him.
I see the review below about fee for black belt. If that person actually would make calls to other locations they would be surprised at how much it cost and realize that this amount is nothing compared to others.
Also if they check the normal cost to take lessons at other places you would realize that what you were paying for the lessons is a lot cheaper than other places. You also receive the ability to attend more classes in a week whereas the others only allow so many classes per month.
I recommend Takemusu to others all the time. Sensei Jay takes the extra step by making sure you are learning in his class, but you are doing well in school and also how you are doing in general. He helps you if you have problems with other kids in school, bullying and anything else you made need.
My daughter is a student at TMMA.Not only has Sensei Jay taught her and art.He has given her self confidence self worth and the knowledge to respect others. She has been there for three plus years but what she has learned will be with her for a lifetime.Hees are very reasonable for this knowledge which one can not put a price on. Wendy Russo
As a single parent of 2, I have been with TMMA for over 3 years. Not only does this school offer the best rates in the area, they are both flexible with payments and reasonable with requests when approached. I have been taking private lessons with Sensei Jay and am well aware of the fees involved. This school does have an agreement that has to be signed and it explains the tuition and other applicable fees. I have done my due diligence when it came to putting myself and my children in another persons care. I recommend this school to anyone who wants a real experience. I have done my homework and there is none that can match Sensei's ability and integrity. My girls and I are very dedicated to TMMA. This school has brought us closer than ever.
For all you have done Sensei,

What the other reviewer does not realize is yes I have called other places and charging $275.00 for his black belt alone is an unusual practice for other dojo's . But if businesses are able to keep gouging you with unsubstantiated fees and we don't say anything where will they stop. My son attended Takemusu for almost 3 years and to be fair it is a small school that pays special attention to their students and that is one of the main reasons he attended .As far as the training, the sensei is very good .The fact of paying someone for your recognition of being a black belt is what was in question. I was told I didn't know the value of a black belt over a lower rank belt? Well.. I do it is what you learn your ability it's your dedication to the art the way you present yourself the confidence you exude the ability to tell right from wrong SO much but not how much you pay to get that recognition .The parents in general are very nice there with exception of a very few .I now know why most dojo's put parents behind glass cause they even had one parent who verbally bullied my son in and out of class that could not be controlled .There was nothing in the payment contract that stated we had to pay him $275.00 for being a black belt and my son also read the email correspondence and could not believe what he read and made his decision to train elsewhere so this is a testament to the training provided at Takemusu my son went in there bullied and in the end he proved he was bully proof.
Sir,
Sir,
I can appreciate your frustration. I am a business owner myself, and I did not go into business to lose money or break even. Profit is not a dirty word. I have been around the martial arts for a long time, I have seen some really good things and some really bad things. My wife is a black belt and her fee was many more times what you seemed to be charged. On a personal note, I know that Sensei goes way beyond just graduating kids to Black Belt, he makes it special. If he is going that extra mile, you can bet he is spending the money to make it so. I have known Sensei for a long time and have a lot of respect for him. I have seen him go out of his way for his students. He doesn't even know I am responding to this. He makes little if no profit on Black Belt Graduation. Anyway, just my two nickels.
I looked at the tmma agreement that I signed and under additional fees it states graduations, special events (black belt graduations), seminars...etc. As far as a fee for Black Belt, no small business owner will quote a price for 2-3 years in advance, there are other factors involved, economy, increased rent, utilities. These are things that are factored into the cost of doing business. Unfortunately, this cost has to be passed to the customer in order to stay in business.
I hope this was a help
I wish you much success
