Firefighters now join companies from all over Monmouth County
The Monmouth County Fire Academy in Howell graduated 56 firefighters from the Firefighter I program last week, county officials said. Firefighter graduates were divided into two classes: Class 98 graduated on May 21 and Class 99 graduated May 22. Both ceremonies were held at the Fire Academy on Route 33, according to a release. Graduates worked 188 hours over 30 sessions and received training in rescue, fire extinguishment, hazardous materials response, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, electrical safety, and care of hoses, ladders and other equipment, the release says. “Tonight, you become members of one of American’s greatest creations – organized firefighting,” Freeholder Director John P. Curley said in the release. “Modern-day …
Monmouth County Freeholders reported that 127 recruits earned their badges and became law enforcement officers
The Monmouth County Police Academy graduated its largest class ever Thursday with 127 recruits earning their badges. The graduates, who served as police officers and Class II officers, will be dispersed to more than 40 departments within Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Mercer, Burlington and Atlantic Counties, Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said. “It was really wonderful to see this,” Burry said. The graduation was held at Brookdale Community College because the academy could not accommodate the large number of graduates, she said. Burry reflected on a time years ago when the academy was going to close due to a lack of interest and support. “Well, we changed that and we’re very happy to say that,” she said, adding that the academy…
Gov. Christie appeared at Seaside Heights boardwalk Friday to promote the Jersey Shore
The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey. Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon — a Guinness World Record at over five miles long — to officially declare the shore open. "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. "I'm so thrilled that this morning we're here with the whole country welcoming the Jersey Shore back." After being battered by Superstorm Sandy, many businesses on the boardwalk are open and welcoming customers, though others continue to make repairs. Despite some grey …
An old-fashioned town parade with lots of music, patriots and fire trucks. There will be two memorial services.
Middletown's traditional Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday, May 27. It kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs through 11:30 a.m., ending at the American Legion Post 338 in Leonardo. There will be services before and after the parade, and free hot dogs and ice cream at the end. "It's a nice day, it's a day of remembrance," said Tom Garretson, and ex-American Legion Commander and member of the township Veterans' Affairs Committee. "We usually get a nice crowd on the parade route. I consider it an old-fashioned parade, something like when I was a kid, many years ago." The parade march is lead by a bagpiper, and features local war veterans and their supporters, brass bands and high school bands from Middletown and Hazlet, the NWS Earle Color …

The motorcyclists were seriously injured in the crash at the Thompson Ave. intersection.
A grand jury in Freehold has returned an indictment charging a Leonardo man on two counts of assault by auto for his involvement in an accident on Route 36 that left two motorcyclists with serious injuries. Thomas Phillips of Ocean Avenue in Leonardo is alleged to have been driving while intoxicated on Oct. 16, 2011 when his car struck two motorcycles stopped for a red light at Thompson Avenue and Route 36, in the westbound lanes, around 12:45 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. The motorcyclists were taken to the hospital trauma centers, one by medevac, for treatment of serious injuries. Phillips was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. An indictment is a formal charge and not a conviction. A defendant is innocent until proven guilty…
You can use this gas price widget to always find the lowest price of the moment. Pro tip: Gas up early this week to save money.

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …
Big or small, we want to know what goals Middletown residents are working towards and how they plan to achieve them. Sponsored by Grape Nuts

Then he famously became one of the first climbers to reach the summit. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Hillary’s epic goal achievement, Patch has partnered with Grape-Nuts’ “What’s Your Mountain” campaign, inspiring today’s adventurers to strive to reach their own goals. DEP Commissioner: side scan sonar used to detect sunken debris; Tourism Commissioner: rental market is healthy
Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …
The party will be courtesy of the TV Network Destination American and USA WEEKEND.
Union Beach has won an "over-the-top" Fourth of July celebration on the beachfront, thanks to its ex-Fire Dept. Chief who nominated the Hurricane Sandy-devastated Bayshore town in a national contest sponsored by the TV network Destination America and USA WEEKEND. The 2 mile-square town was selected with Fayetteville, NC as being "most deserving" among 3,500 entries submitted in March. The judges were persuaded by Union Beach resident Robert LaBerta's 500-word essay. In it, LaBerta wrote, "I'm a humble 37-year resident of a small NJ town. During Superstorm Sandy, 90% of our town was flooded and many homes destroyed. The residents of my small town came together to not only rebuild but save each other emotionally. I had the honor of being …
