The Monmouth University Class of 2013 took center stage today as PNC Bank Arts Center hosted the university's 82nd commencement ceremony on Wednesday. If the students took center stage, Monmouth University President Paul G. Gaffney II, who is retiring after a 10-year tenure at the helm of the school, was a close second. Gaffney addressed the graduates and delivered the commencement address. "I wish you fair winds, a following sea, a tall ship and bright star to steer by," Gaffney said.

Investigation alleges that customers were poured cheap booze even when paying for premium liquor, authorities say

TGI Fridays of Hazlet is among 29 bars and restaurants throughout New Jersey targeted by state officials during a year-long investigation into establishments that may have served cheap booze while charging premium prices, according to the state Attorney General's Office. Alcoholic beverages have been seized and records have been demanded from 29 licensed bars and restaurants -- including Fridays at 3045 Route 35 in Hazlet  -- in the state as part of "Operation Swill,'' according to the release. The investigation alleges that the establishments -- a dozen TGI Fridays among them -- filled premium alcoholic beverage bottles with cheaper alcohol in an attempt to fool patrons and increase profits, the release says. Having worked in bars in my younger days, this is a common practice in many bars, especially ones that are struggling, I wonder if this is a common practice in TGIFridays or are all these on the list owned by the same company? Obituary: Sheila Nisbet Quist, Teacher of Special Needs Students in Middletown

Quist had retired from the school district and recently celebrated a 50th golden anniversary.

Sheila Nisbet Quist, of Neptune, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at home in her sleep. Sheila was a longtime resident of the Jersey Shore and retired from Middletown, NJ School district where she worked for many years as a compassionate educator, teaching many children of special needs to read. After raising two sons, Sheila returned to school where she earned a Masters degree. Children and dogs were her love. Sheila was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Patricia and Bert Nisbet. She loved and enjoyed her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Barr; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bert and Dawn Quist of Atlanta, Georgia and Kevin and Hillary Quist of Hoboken; her grandsons, Cole and Dax were the loves of her…

Expedited Passport Services Available in Monmouth County

Applicants must allow two to three weeks for delivery

Families planning to travel abroad this summer have access to expedited passport services, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of State. “While we urge U.S. citizens to apply as early as possible for their passport needs, the Department offers convenient options for those who need their travel documents sooner than our standard four to six week processing time,” the new release said. There are more than 8,000 facilities across the country accepting expedited passport applications. First time passports, passport renewals, additional visa pages and data corrections all qualify for expedited service. An annual report on child well being in New Jersey found that Monmouth County saw a drop in juvenile arrests and an increase in child care options for parents

Monmouth County saw a rise in child poverty but a drop in juvenile arrests, according to the annual New Jersey Kids Count rankings, a report on child well being in the state. The rankings measure progress in improving the lives of children in various critical areas including child health and early care and education. This year, Monmouth County remained steady at 6th place. The well being of Monmouth County children progressed in several areas, including more women receiving early prenatal care, a drop in juvenile arrests and births to young females and an increase in child care options for parents. Yankees Help Bring New Rival for Red Bulls

New York Yankees and Manchester City have teamed up to bring a new professional soccer team to NYC by 2015.

The New York Red Bulls, who call Harrison their home, will not be the only face of professional footy in the metropolitan area for much longer. New York City is planning to kick the ball around in the MLS come the spring of 2015. Major League Soccer Commissioner Dan Garber announced the birth of the newest franchise in the MLS: the New York City Football Club. Sandy Hook Coast Guard Base Still Recovering After Hurricane

Housing was damaged and small equipment lost on the Hook, but the base is "fully operational" say authorities.

Despite the unprecedented destruction caused to the 165-year-old Sandy Hook Coast Guard Base brought on by Superstorm Sandy in October, there are no plans to close or relocate the base and it is fully operational, even though it is still recovering from the damage caused by the storm. “The base was able to perform all Coast Guard operations within five days of the storm’s passage,” U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York spokesman Charles W. Harmony School Principal Rehired After School Board Reverses Prior Decision

In the face of an outpouring of community support Tuesday night, the Middletown Township Board of Education reversed a prior decision and unanimously rehired Paulson citing "new information."

Harmony Elementary School Principal Erik Paulson will return to school next fall, following a unanimous decision Tuesday night by the Board of Education.  On May 13, the board had voted 5-4 to not offer a new contract to the popular admininstrator, who would have received tenure. But in a stunning turn of events very late at the May 21 meeting, the board effectively reversed its prior decision after meeting in closed session. When they emerged around 11:45 p.m., board attorney Christopher Parton made a statement saying that there was some new information brought forth during the closed door session, of which he did not elaborate. UPDATE: How Middletown Will Give Back to Oklahoma

After Sandy, volunteers from Oklahoma played a key role in giving comfort.

  Upon approval by the state and township for a license, The Port Monmouth Fire Company will donate proceeds of a Super 50-50 drawing on June 29 to the Southern Baptist Convention of Oklahoma, the organization who came to serve hot food in Middletown for the two monhts after Hurricane Sandy. Port Monmouth Fire is holding a "Hurricane Sandy Thank You Party from noon-5 pm on that day. It is open to the public, with donated food from Middletown restaurants Outback and Sonic, as well as live entertainment.
