A man is in custody after authorities gathered at a residence in the West Keansburg section of Hazlet near Laurel Avenue and 4th Street Sunday night. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Public Information Officer Charles Webster confirmed the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team, the area's specialized law enforcement tactics team, was called to the scene by Hazet Police Chief James Broderick after the department received reports of shots fired in the area, Webster said. No injuries have been reported and authorities later confirmed that shots were not actually fired, he said. Laurel Avenue was closed between 7th and 2nd Street. The police have received a $4,000 grant to pay for saturation patrols between May 20-June 4.
Starting Monday, Middletown Police will be taking part in the national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign through June 2. “As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night – no excuses,” said Division of Highway Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky. “Officers throughout New Jersey are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing their seat belt.” Middletown is one of 124 agencies that received $4,000 each to run the seatbelt enforcement checkpoints and saturation patrols in New Jersey. Curious students stepped out of the doors of Middletown High School South on Thursday at lunchtime to check out the cause of the black smoke darkening the sky in the distance, back behind the athletic fields. There was the sound of pops, then the fire sirens, and finally a tall tower went up in flames. A cell tower located on the property adjacent to the Township's Fire Academy was on fire. About 30 firefighters from four companies responded to the call, which as reported at 11:14 a.m. Firefighters found the fire burning in the interior of the cell tower structure, said Fire Dept. spokesman John Isaksen. Michelle D. Zahner led authorities on a chase from Holmdel to Wall Township--where she lost a front tire--then back to the Bayshore, Holmdel police said.
A February police chase which was foiled by a Wall traffic circle yielded formal charges for Michelle D. Zahner. Holmdel police attempted a traffic stop with Zahner, 32 of Keansburg, when she allegedly failed the stop and led police on a multi-jurisdiction chase. Patrolman Jonathan Martin pursued the vehicle down Laurel Avenue and into Keansburg. The car stopped twice but police said Zahner sped off when Martin stepped out of the vehicle. Zahner allegedly turned back down Laurel Avenue and fled onto the Garden State Parkway. Holmdel police said Zahner was observed throwing items out of the driver's side window during the parkway portion of the chase. Operating a motor vehicle during a period of license suspension is a fourth degree crime.
A grand jury in Freehold has indicted a man from Leonardo on a charge of driving while suspended on Jan. 19, 2012. Kevin Robbins, 45, of Concord Ave. is accused of operating a motor vehicle while his license was suspended for a violation of driving while intoxicated. According to documents from the Monmouth County Superior Court documents, he was previously convicted for a violation of driving while suspended while under suspension, as well as operating a motor vehicle while his license was suspended for a second charge of driving while intoxicated. The jury's vote to indict on Monday is a formal charge, not a conviction. A defendant is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
When police presented a search warrant at a residence off Tindall Road, they said one suspect fled -- but police caught up to him.
Middletown Police say they have arrested two alleged heroin dealers from a township residence in a neighborhood off Tindall Road. On Thursday, police arrested Jacquelyn Mozda, 22, at her home on Melrose Place in Middletown. Also arrested at the house was Dashawn O. Nance, 24, whose address is South Arlington Ave. in East Orange. A Middletown man has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of theft and illegal drug possesion. Elbert Franke, 34, who lives in an apartment on Truez Place, will stand trial on charges he attempted to steal a $500 generator from Lowe's of Holmdel on Dec. 13, 2012. He will also face formal charges of illegal possession of heroin and cocaine. The May 9 indictment is a formal charge, not a conviction. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 54-year old Rumson man was taken by medevac to Jersey Shore Medical Center.
Emergency workers spent 45 minutes extricating the driver of a 2001 Dodge Vipor after the car crashed into a tree on Navesink River Road around 5:31 p.m. Monday, according to police. The driver was identified as Frank Caccavo, Jr., 54, of Rumson. He remains hospitalized at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Det. Lt. Stephen Dollinger said Monday night. The accident occurred in Locust, near the intersection with Browns Dock Rd. Monday night, aid EMS spokesman Bob Pfleger. At the scene were Monoc paramedics, Leonardo and Fairview First Aid squads and Navesink Fire Co, said Lt. Dollinger. The burglary was reported on Saturday around 12:30 p.m.
Holmdel police are looking for a suspect in the burglary of a local bagel business. A burglary at Sheepshead Baygels on Route 35 in Holmdel was reported on Saturday afternoon, according to police. A front window was found broken and $200 missing from the register. Police said the broken window will cost $700 to replace. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Holmdel Police Department Detective Bureau at 732-946-4400. No suspect description was released to the media.
