Harbor devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
Nearly a week after Hurricane Sandy and with a harbor suffering from nearly $30 or $40 million worth of damage, Atlantic Highlands Borough Administrator and OEM Coordinator Adam Hubeny finally got some good news. Thompson Electric trucks—three of them—rolled past his office in the municipal building on First Avenue Saturday morning. The biggest need Hubeny had at that moment could be summed up in one word: “Electric, electric, electric,” he said. Electric for residents to feel normal again, electric to light up the unique restaurants and charming boutiques on First Avenue, and electric to fully assess and clean up the damage to the Atlantic Highlands harbor. “It’s this guy,” Atlantic Highands Councilman Peter Doyle said, crediting Hubeny …

Zoe’s Vintage Kitchen, Atlantic Highlands' charming antique-themed restaurant, has been serving up delicious breakfasts and lunches for almost seven years.
Nearly seven years ago, Lou and Grace Dakoglou moved from their house in North Jersey, seeking to open a restaurant in their new Atlantic Highlands community. With the help of their children, Anna and Zach, they transformed an old produce market, ensconced in a residential neighborhood on First Avenue, into Zoe’s Vintage Kitchen — where it is forever 1950. While Lou worked as chief cook, Grace became the interior decorator. A schoolteacher by day and an avid eBay shopper by night, she had long collected antique kitchenware and aprons. So when it was finally time to choose a restaurant theme, the decision seemed obvious. Anna, who works as a server when she’s not attending class, said, “My mother always says that life gathers around the …

Casino Royale LLC is making a bet that a floating casino boat would succeed in the waters off Atlantic Highlands, and the borough could be the winner.
People in Atlantic Highlands are talking about a proposal to dock a three story floating casino boat off Atlantic Highlands that could hold up to 400 passengers. On July 10, residents packed a Harbor Commission meeting to learn more about a proposal by Casino Royale LLC to berth a 184-foot vessel in the marina to provide gambling and entertainment offshore in Federal waters. The upside is the potential to create 65 to 100 new jobs, and churn up a new source of revenue such as docking fees for the Harbor Commission, according to a summary of the meeting by the Commission on its website. But some asked, at what cost? Residents had questions about parking, noise, utility demands, safety and licensing. The Two River Times' John Burton has …
