Winners from Wednesday night's seventh annual Basie Awards, include students from Mater Dei Prep, and Middletown High School South.
For the seventh year, the Count Basie Theatre has helped enrich and promote high school theater by recognizing the county's best performances with the Basie Awards. As the years have progressed, so too has the reach of the Basie Awards. When Numa Saisselin, CEO of the Count Basie Theatre, developed the Basie Awards seven years ago, 15 schools participated. This year 24 schools from all over Monmouth County took part in evaluation process, which as also grown over the years, from 25 during the first Basie Awards season to more than 40. For the seventh year, the Count Basie Theatre is recognizing high school performing arts with the Basie Awards, a program that's committed to fostering an appreciation of the arts and honoring excellence in high school theater. The nominations have been announced; and, this year, Middletown South and North high schools scored several nominations for the Rimers of Eldritch and Bye Bye Birdie productions. Mater Dei also won a few of its own nominations for Almost, Maine. Last year, an all-time high of 25 Monmouth County private, public, and vocational high schools participated in the Basie Awards. In case you missed it ... Last week, Mater Dei Prep graduated 77 students. School officials touted the accomplishments of the class of 2011. One of the high school’s most celebrated feats of the year was its sweep win in the annual Count Basie Theatre Awards. Nominated for 16, Mater Dei won six of the awards in a ceremony on May 25. That night, the Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players and its production crews were recognized for their musical theatre talents for the 2010-2011 school year. It was the moment many high school students and faculty were waiting for. The moment when they, with great excitement and trepidation heard, "The envelope, please ..." Last night, winners for the sixth annual Basie Awards were announced at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. The distinction recognizes outstanding achievement in the dramatic and musical theater productions of Monmouth County's high school theater companies. The Basie Awards are tonight, and there are students and faculty from four Middletown high schools: High School North, High School South, Mater Dei and High Technology High School.
