Teachers Scoop Up Books From Shuttered Library

The books at the recently-closed Bayshore Branch Library in Port Monmouth will be shared in the Middletown schools.

In recent days, the small parking lot at the recently closed Bayshore Library Branch in Port Monmouth has been full of cars.  At the invitation of the headquarters dozens of teachers have stopped in to pick out more than 3,000 books for permanent use in their classrooms and school libraries, said Library Director Susan O'Neal in a press release. More materials are expected to go to storm-damaged schools and needy libraries in the next few days, she said.  The township's three library branches closed March 1 after the majority of the Library Board of Trustees approved an annual budget that factored in branch closings.  The Bayshore Library Branch building is owned by the Township of Middletown, which will convert the space into offices for …

Say Goodbye to Navesink, Lincroft and Bayshore Library Branches

It is the last day of business for the three Middletown Township Library branches.

The three branch libraries are scheduled to close on Friday, March 1 at 5 p.m. due to what the majority of the Library Board says are budgetary constraints. They voted on Feb. 20 to end services at its three satellite locations. Cardholders of Bayshore cards will be automatically changed to Middletown main branch. All "holds" can be picked up at the Main Library after March 1st.   The Bayshore Library is open Fri. 9 a.m.- noon; 1-5 p.m. Principal Library Assistant: Grace Moschberger. Address: 180 Main Street, Port Monmouth, NJ. The building will revert back to the ownership by Middletown Township, which may use it for office space. The library may maintain a computer center there for the benefit of users. The reading material in the …

Legion, You guys think you are so slick and that the people of Middletown are stupid. Tell me then, how long had it been planned by Mayor Fiore and the TC to move the Township employees from Croydon Hall to the Bayshore library.....2 years, at least? It just seems awfully "coincidental" that they had no place to move, but by serendipidty, in the nick of time, the Bayshore Branch library becomes …   more ›

Effort To Save Library Branches Gets No Action From Township Committee

Elected officials tell residents that they have no control over the Library Board's potential decision to close the Navesink, Lincroft and Bayshore branches of the township library system.

Middletown residents who are urgently seeking to stop the shutdown of the Navesink, Bayshore and Lincroft library branches came to the Township Committee meeting room Monday night hoping for assistance, but checked out empty-handed.  Mayor Gerard Scharfenberger, 2012 mayor Tony Fiore and former Library Board Commissioner and Committeeman Kevin Settembrino listened to the ideas, outrage and pleas from community members, but repeatedly suggested the campaign belongs in front of the Library Board, because the governing body has no role in its decision. "We want to have an open dialogue," said Michael Winchell, the advocate for the Navesink Library Branch. "We're asking for your engagement."  Winchell had come to the meeting not to spar over …

There are a lot of interesting facts here in this discussion. Has anyone a justification for the $500,000.00 that was transferred from the library to the township, I believe it was in 2011?   more ›

Library Board May Shut The Book On 3 Library Branches

On Wednesday, trustees may choose to solve its financial problems with a vote to close the Lincroft, Bayshore and Navesink branches.

To the dismay of some loyal patrons, the Lincroft, Navesink and Bayshore branches of the Middletown Township Library system could be shuttered by an official vote next week. A letter issued by Library Director Susan O'Neal was posted in the branches yesterday. It said, "Pending final approval of the Trustees of the Library, we regretfully announce that all branch libraries are scheduled to be closed to the public on Friday, January 25, 2013, at 5:00 pm. This action is necessary due to major budgetary constraints. Discussions with local community groups and schools will continue to pursue ideas and possibilities for some type of neighborhood library services in the future." A patron working on an online job application at the Bayshore …
