Middletown students write, type, count and read the summer away during the Middletown School District's summer enrichment program.
While some students are out on the beach, others are hitting the books in Middletown’s first and free summer enrichment program. Now in its third week, Middletown students from both public and private schools overcome the summer slump in an hour and a half enrichment program Monday through Thursday throughout the month of July and August. Students, who completed grades kindergarten through 8th, engage in science, math, and language arts programs at both Bayshore Middle School and Leonardo Elementary School in classrooms with 20 students or less. While high school students work on HSPA prep, SAT prep and college application and scholarship essay writing in the second floor of Bayshore Middle School. Students from Middletown High School …

High school and middle school graduation dates and places announced
On the subject of graduations in the Middletown school district this year, a little more change is in the wings. After many years of consistency in venues, the locations for both high and middle school commencement ceremonies were switched last year. And, this year, the place for middle school graduations will change once again. For the first time, the students of Thompson, Thorne and Bayshore middle schools will graduate at different times (yet to be determined) on June 15 at Middletown High School South. The High School South venue was the original place plan for last year’s middle school graduations, but then-Interim Superintendent Thomas Pagano had decided that Brookdale Commumity College was a better place for the 2011 ceremonies. …

The NJ Dept. of Education's new accountability system labels MAST and High Tech High, Middletown's two of four county career academies in Monmouth County among the top 112 schools in the state.
With No Child Left Behind essentially off the books, welcome to New Jersey’s new age — and labels — for school accountability. The Christie administration released last week the final list of schools that will be highlighted under new accountability rules that put heightened attention on the very lowest and the very highest achieving schools, while giving leeway to the vast middle. Replacing the labels of “schools in need of improvement” in the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the new nomenclature will be Priority Schools, Focus Schools and Reward Schools. The lists total 370 schools in all, about 1/7 of the state’s 2,500 schools. The Priority Schools are the lowest of the low in terms of state test scores, the Focus Schools more about …

Readin’ and writin’ and huntin’ for newly listed properties in Middletown
It’s Labor Day, and for the second week in a row, there will be few, if any, open houses. Hurricane Irene ruined last week’s opportunities, and next week brings the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The last time house hunters were afforded the opportunity to tour properties for sale was Aug. 21; and it looks like they will be waiting a month until Sept. 18 to hunt again. This week House Hunt decided to look for newly listed properties in our area, with an eye towards the coming school year. In the caption under each picture, you’ll not only find the details about the homes, but also which public schools the kids will attend, according to our source Realtor.com. It won’t take lots of ‘rithmetic to see the starting prices for these homes that …

A good bye bid by administration for graduates to keep Bayshore in their hearts
The 256 proud eighth grade Middletown students of Bayshore Middle School's class of 2011 graduated Wednesday in a commencement ceremony in Brookdale Community College's Collins Arena, Lincroft. The high school-bound students received diplomas and awards, and were honored by administrators, teachers, and their families and friends. "Before you sit a group of young men and women who are scholars, athletes, musicians, friends, and leaders," said principal Carol Force, to the audience. "It is my sincere hope that they will always keep Bayshore in their hearts in the future." "My farewell message is that it is important to realize that you are making your own memories now," she said, addressing the graduates. "Your choices will determine what …

I agree with you Bob. The students should graduate on their respective football fields. As for the middle schools I am not surprised that the town would choose South as the venue even though the majority of the students are in lion country!   more ›
