The fire was accidental in nature, according to the county prosecutor's office.
The early-morning May 26 fire that consumed the long-standing Buhler Jeep Chrysler auto dealership building on Route 35 in Hazlet was an accident, said First Assistant Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office on Saturday. The cause was "a faulty relay in the battery of a car that the dealership was servicing," said Gramiccioni, in a written statement. He declined further comment. On that morning, a passerby noticed something at the dealership and called Hazlet Police, according to Hazlet Police Chief James Broderick, who was at the scene on that Saturday. More than a dozen local fire companies, as well as county services and numerous first aid vehicles flooded the area, temporarily closing down …

The busy dealership/service center that employed 40 people is now a pile of charred rubble. The owners say they will rebuild.
In less than a day, the busy Buhler Chrysler Jeep dealership where new and used cars have been bought and serviced for nearly 50 years was reduced to blackened metal, broken bricks, shattered glass and melted car parts. An early morning fire on Saturday caused so much damage that the building was considered a total loss, said Darren Buhler in the parking lot on Saturday night. Although it is believed the fire began in the service area of the building, an official cause for the fire has not yet been determined. It is under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's office. About 40 people work for Buhler at the Hazlet location. They also have an auto dealership in Eatontown. On Sunday morning, employees at the fire scene were busily …

The rear of the dealership was engulfed in flames, and the roof has collapsed. The three-alarm fire brought a large response from area fire companies.
Firefighters are battling a fire in the rear of the Buhler car dealership that was first reported by Hazlet Police at 5:15 a.m. Saturday morning. Tall flames could be seen in the rear of the building around 5:30 a.m. Huge clouds of black smoke drifted over the highway towards Keyport. The fire is believed to have started in the service garage, an area separated by a thick brick wal, behind the new car showroom, said Hazlet First Assistant Township Deputy Chief Andrew Christ. The roof of the rear section of the building has collapsed. One firefighter was taken to Bayshore Community Hospital for a condition related to smoke inhalation, said Christ. "This is an all-hands type fire situation," said Christ from a command area on Maple Drive. …
