Festive sendoff for the Class of 2013.

At Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, happy high school seniors filed down hallways and out of school behind the newly formed bagpipe and drum band, as a ceremonial grand exit. The last day of school for seniors was May 3, but exams continue.  In a 3rd year tradition for the all-boys school, CBA President Br. Young men in blue kilts make a loud sound in local parades.

The Christian Brothers Academy Pipes and Drum band made its debut marching in the South Amboy and Rumson St. Patrick's Day parades last weekend, less than 12 hours after their brand new St. Andrew tartan kilts arrived at the Lincroft high school campus.  The dozen members have been loudly practicing for a year. They've learned The Marine Hymn, The Caissons Go Rolling Along, Minstrel Boy, Sean South of Garryowen and Amazing Grace. Some of them had no prior musical instrument experience. "As you can imagine, a year ago, the band sounded like kids who never played before," said CBA President Frank Byrne, who's been playing the Highland pipes for 22 years with Manhattan College Pipes and Drums. Fingers are crossed that Sunday will result in another.  "It's very rare to win a state championship; it's a privilege and an honor," said Coach Vito Chiaravalloti, in an interview before the team's traditional pre-competition pasta dinner Saturday night. "The boys take it seriously to be lucky enough to win one."  You don't get to be one of the team's 52 members …
