Nearly 10,000 guns have been turned in across the state since the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Authorities say the massacre prompted residents to rid their homes of guns.

Twelve sawed-off shotguns and one AK-47 were among the illegal guns collected in Monmouth County.
The Monmouth County gun buyback program brought in 45 illegal weapons last weekend, including an AK-47 and 15 other assault rifles. A total of 1,581 guns were collected in Keansburg and Asbury Park on March 8 and 9. This was the fourth buyback program in the county, supervised by the State Attorney General's Office. Among the haul was 761 handguns, 409 rifles and 356 shotguns -- but only 40 were considered usable, said Chiesa. The state has now collected 7,092 firearms from state-run buyback programs, according to Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa. The buybacks are funded through criminal forfeiture funds. In Monmouth County, law enforcement officers paid an average of $132 per gun, for a maximum of three guns per person. The county program…

Criminals, drug dealers and thieves do NOT surrender guns. I suggest if you do not own a firearm put a sign outside your yard that says, "Proud to be a gun free zone" I will guarantee a home invasion or robbery. Our home has a sign that says, "we don't call 911"   more ›
