Investigation alleges that customers were poured cheap booze even when paying for premium liquor, authorities say
TGI Fridays of Hazlet is among 29 bars and restaurants throughout New Jersey targeted by state officials during a year-long investigation into establishments that may have served cheap booze while charging premium prices, according to the state Attorney General's Office. Alcoholic beverages have been seized and records have been demanded from 29 licensed bars and restaurants -- including Fridays at 3045 Route 35 in Hazlet -- in the state as part of "Operation Swill,'' according to the release. The investigation alleges that the establishments -- a dozen TGI Fridays among them -- filled premium alcoholic beverage bottles with cheaper alcohol in an attempt to fool patrons and increase profits, the release says. Fines, increased inspections required for big box retailer
Kmart will pay $302,500, donate $25,000 worth of infant formula to charity, pay for continued unannounced state inspections, and implement new product inspection measures as part of a settlement with the state Division of Consumer Affairs, officials announced Friday. The big box store had been found to have sold or offered for sale expired infant formula and non-prescription medications, the state agency said in a prepared statement. During inspections, inspectors found 257 packages of infant formula, as well as non-prescription medications, that were between 9 months to 29 months past the expiration date, but still available for purchase on the shelves at 19 stores in 13 counties. Stores are bustling with customers looking for water, flashlights, batteries and generators
The pre-hurricane shopping spree has begun. Area residents are buzzing up and down the aisles of local stores, in search of bottled water, non-perishable foods and generators as Hurricane Sandy tracks toward Monmouth County. Old Bridge neighbors Teal Baughan and Melisa Takacs took a trip to ShopRite of Aberdeen Friday afternoon to prepare for the storm. Last year during Tropical Storm Irene, their neighborhood managed to maintain power, however the pair are taking the better-safe-than-sorry approach. "I'm having trouble finding a generator, although I'm not sure I want to spend the money," Baughan said.
