Fines, increased inspections required for big box retailer
Kmart will pay $302,500, donate $25,000 worth of infant formula to charity, pay for continued unannounced state inspections, and implement new product inspection measures as part of a settlement with the state Division of Consumer Affairs, officials announced Friday. The big box store had been found to have sold or offered for sale expired infant formula and non-prescription medications, the state agency said in a prepared statement. During inspections, inspectors found 257 packages of infant formula, as well as non-prescription medications, that were between 9 months to 29 months past the expiration date, but still available for purchase on the shelves at 19 stores in 13 counties. Miraculously, nobody was hurt outside or inside the store Tuesday.
A car careened backwards into the front of the Hazlet K-Mart Tuesday morning -- and incredibly nobody got hurt. Marie Barrese, 84, of Hazlet was backing her 2005 Buick LeSabre out of a parking space close to the store. "At the point she was ready to proceed forward, she stepped on the gas instead of the brake," said Hazlet Police Lt. Stephen Schmidt. The car reversed backwards onto the low sidewalk, pushing a bottled water display into the two plate glass windows, which nearly impacted a children's coin-operated taxi car ride. The crash caused minor structural damage to the store. K-Mart was closed for about a half hour while a building inspector checked the structure. Sears Holdings, Inc. will shutter 100 to 120 underperforming Sears and K Mart stores. List of closing stores to be announced by nationwide retailer later
The fate of Sears in Middletown hangs in the balance as the national retailer's parent company announced today it would mothball 100 to 120 underperforming stores according to the Associated Press. A Kmart located a few miles north on Route 35 and Bethany Road in Hazlet could also see its doors close for good if its shared corporate parent, Sears Holdings Corporation of Hoffman Estates, Ill. targets it for shutdown. For now, employees and customers of both stores will have to wait until Sears Holdings releases its list at a later date according to the company website. I'm inclined to agree with Stuart, above. It is part of the aging process as mental faculties decline. I'm not sure what the answer is, and I don't like the idea of taking away anyone's driver's license. However, maybe a retesting of some sort should occur in order to renew one's license after a certain age. Thank goodness no one was hurt at K-Mart.   more ›
