Letter: Thanks To Those Who Cleared a Historic Burial Ground in Leonardo

Joanne Peck of Middletown writes about a remarkable improvement in the Applegate Family Cemetery.

To whomever cleared out the small, old cemetery at the corner of Burlington Avenue and Cedar Avenue, thank you! I've lived in this neighborhood for 30 years and have never had the opportunity to look at the old headstones in this cemetary. Each time I walked by, I thought about how sad and disrespectful it was to the poor souls who rested there to let the cemetary get so overgrown. So, again, thank you. You did a wonderful job, whoever you are.

Middletown's White House Tour

House Hunt celebrates President’s Day weekend with some open houses with (mostly) white exteriors

You’ll feel positively presidential with the featured homes in this weekend’s House Hunt: Every open house is inside a white house. No, not THE White House. Rather, a look into some of Middletown’s many listings that feature a home exterior that’s actually white ... or off-white ... or maybe a little almond. You’ll have to go and see for yourself, because, frankly, some are just “white-ish.” Sure, it’s a quirky little gimmick to get you to eyeball the column. But you won’t regret perusing these properties that we obtained from Realtor.com, all with open house events this Sunday, Feb. 19. You can see the exact times and details about each listing by clicking the gallery photo and reading the caption. Oh, and that map to the right with the …

Mysterious Middletown Sightings Tour

Once a week Middletown Patch will be featuring odd Middletown places

This week, Middletown Patch's strange sighting, above, is off Center Avenue in the Leonardo section. A la Addams Family credo, this week's feature is, a little creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky. It's known as the Dempsy House. The rickety gates in front of the historic peanut stone house, with two smoke stacks, has the year 1923 embossed on them. A dayglow X marks the spot of the shuttered front window or door, signaling that the structure is not fit to live in. A matching peanut stone wall lines the front of the house's property perimeter. Do you have the scoop on this mysterious sighting? Let us know in the comments section what you think and/or know about the Dempsey House. A feature story on the sighting will follow.
