As the sunset at the Sea Gulls’ Nest at Sandy Hook as former Lions Club President Lori Anne Oliwa took the position as chairwoman of the Middletown Township Lions Club. In the two-hour ceremony in the private area of the restaurant, the Middletown Township Lions Club inducted its new executive board.   “Today millions of Lions all over the world are inducted into their new positions,” Oliwa said as she wiped her eyes. “For 65 years this club has proudly served the community. As president, I looked to not only preserve their legacy but wonder what legacy I would leave behind.” Larry Caminiti took the oath as president as Chairwoman Lori Anne Oliwa handed him the presiding gavel and bell.  “This past year was a transitional year,” Caminiti …

Athlete of the Week: HS North's Emily Lavin

Lavin tapped for leading Lions in wins

Lavin led her Lions to their first win of the season in the team’s opener against Manalapan. The 72-59 victory came thanks to a double-double from Lavin in which she scored 15 points while also grabbing a game-high 19 rebounds. The senior received help from teammates Mia Ehling and Maureen Ciccosante, each of whom scored 12 points, respectively. Since the season-opening win, Middletown North has lost its only game, falling to Monmouth Regional 36-33. In that game, the Falcons held Lavin to a mere seven points, but she still grabbed four rebounds, a team high. Middletown Turkey Day: Football Day

The classic precursor to turkey dinner — high school football

Middletown Thanksgiving Day Football Is there anything better than watching your favorite teams and players suit up on Turkey Day to play a little pigskin? It’s doubtful. That’s why this year Monmouth County residents should be thankful for the opportunity to watch four of their local high schools take the field early Thursday morning. This year, fans can watch the 6-3 Middletown South Eagles take on the 4-5 Lions of crosstown rival Middletown North. After starting the year with an ugly two-game losing streak, the Eagles finished the regular season winning each of their final six regular season games. It wasn’t until the first round of the NJSIAA tournament against Northern Burlington that South would suffer another loss. Much like the …

Bouncing Back: Lions Football Preview

On the heels of a two-win season that followed a pair of state playoff appearances, Middletown North looks to get back to the postseason this fall.

After registering the football program’s first consecutive state playoff appearances since 1984-85, Middletown High School North dropped back in the pack with a 2-8 record last season. Now the hope is that a new offense and a solid array of skilled players can help the Lions prove that last season was more of a hiccup than the start of a trend in the opposite direction. “There is a lot of uncertainty because of the new system and the new players, but the mentality here is still great,’’ said sixth-year head coach Joe Trezza. “The kids are going in thinking they can be successful.’’ “Last year, the whole team realized we didn’t get it done,’’ said Joe Racioppi, a senior running back/defensive back. “This whole offseason we’ve been busting …

Lions Bats Silenced in Blowout Loss

Middletown North can't muster enough offense in loss to Manalapan.

It did not take long to understand it would be a rough day for the Middletown North boys baseball team. Lions' starting pitcher Russ Halbach left the game after the first inning with an arm injury, opening the door for the Manalapan Braves, who took full advantage in a 12-3 victory, Wednesday afternoon at Manalapan High School. "We couldn't catch too many breaks today," Middletown North head coach Jon Scala said, "When a kid whose supposed to be our number one pitcher goes down with an arm injury, it doesn't help." After retiring two of the first three batters to open the game, Halbach surrendered three runs — one unearned from a wild pitch — before returning to the dugout. "When Russ [Halbach] comes out throwing low 70's [MPH] when he …
