Large Brush Fire Along Parkway in Cheesequake State Park Under Control

The approximately 5-acre fire caused state police to close the right lane on the southbound side Thursday morning.

Flames and thick smoke could be seen billowing from Cheesequake State Park by Garden State Parkway commuters Thursday morning as a fire quickly spread through the brush. New Jersey State Police received a call around 9 a.m. alerting them of the fire near the guardrail on the southbound side of the Parkway near milemarker 122. About fifteen minutes later, officers closed the right lane while firefighters from Old Bridge, Laurence Harbor, Cheesequake and Sayreville worked to bring the approximately five acre blaze under control.  The traffic lane was reopened at about 10:30 a.m., according to state police, as fire departments finished up at the scene.  The New Jersey Forest Fire Service (NJFFS) also responded. Updated Local, County Crime Stats to Be Available Online

The N.J. State Police website will be updated weekly with municipal and county crime statistics.

A news release from the New Jersey State Police: The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Unit has just taken a significant step forward in reporting crime throughout the state. Today, a link was placed on the public web site that connects users to very recent and comparative crime data for municipalities and counties. The data is updated every week, or as often as municipalities provide fresh numbers.  “For the first time, we are able to give the public a sense of the current crime picture in their area. Even as preliminary data, this will be a great new tool for the public,” said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. UPDATE: Silver Alert Canceled, Leonardo Man with Alzheimers Located in Pemberton

NJ State Police say the 74 year old was in good condition.

UPDATE: Middletown Police said Thursday evening that the 74-year old Leonardo man that went missing earlier Thursday was later found in Pemberton, located in Burlington County, NJ. He was in good condition.  _____________ Original story NJ State Police have issued a Silver Alert for a 74-year old man from Leonardo who suffers from Alzheimers.  He is 6" tall, 150 lbs with blue eyes and grey hair. He is wearing jeans, a dark blue jacket, brown shoes and flannel shirt. He is driving a black Ford Focus with license plate P26-APL.  He was last seen at 25 Leonard St., in Leonardo.  Anyone who sees a man fitting that description is asked to call 911.

NJ Crime Rose 3% in 2011, Report Shows

Murder, rape and robberies up, aggravated assaults down from 2010.

Overall crime in New Jersey rose 3 percent from 2010 to 2011, but violent crimes remained the same, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa. Those violent crimes, which are classified as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault made up for 27,173 — or 13 percent — of the state’s overall crimes, according to the NJ State Police's 2011 Uniform Crime Report. Overall, there were 217,073 reported crimes in New Jersey in 2011. Murder rose 2 percent from 2010 to 2011, from 372 reported incidents to 380. Rape reports rose from 985 to 991, and robberies had the biggest jump from 11,859 to 12,216, the report showed. Aggravated assault dropped 3 percent from 13,958 reports to 13,586. NJ State Police Hiring Recruits

As many as 225 spots will be available for applicants who want to be state troopers.

Police departments across New Jersey have been hit hard by layoffs over the past few years, due to budget cuts in a crippled economy.  The effects of the recession linger, but one law-enforcement agency in the state is actually hiring.  New Jersey State Police announced Wednesday that they will begin accepting applications next month from candidates who want to be state troopers. As many as 225 spots will be available when two State Police academy classes commence training next spring.  The application period runs online from May 7 to 29. This is the first time the state police have accepted applications since February 2010. The most recent class of state troopers graduated this past January, adding 85 to the ranks.  State Police …
