Police: Report of Unexploded Ordnance at Middletown's Ideal Beach Is a Dud

Trained police units scrambled to the scene, but eventually discovered the suspicious object was never active, said police.

Beachfront roads in a section of northern Middletown were closed and a few homes evacuated while police units from Middletown Township and a specialized squad from Naval Weapons Station Earle urgently investigated a report of unexploded ordnance on the beach Friday morning. But by noon, Middletown Township Police Det. Lt. Stephen Dollinger was able to report that there was nothing for residents to worry about. Dollinger said that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from NWS Earle determined that the ordnance that was retrieved from Ideal Beach in Northern Middletown was not real and may have been used for training at one time.  "The ordnance was never active," Dollinger said in a statement.  NWS Earle base spokesman Michael Brady said the…

It is important that children are taught that if they find something suspicious, not to touch our move it. I'm glad to hear that this was a "dud." The chances of any danger are miniscule, however recently in Germany several live explosives were found from World War II.   more ›

County To Spray For Mosquitoes Thursday Morning

Trucks will begin spraying for mosquitoes beginning at 1 a.m. in sections of North Middletown.

  The Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission (MCMEC) will be spraying between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Thursday, August 16 to kill mosquito larvae in sections of North Middletown. The spray is designed to prevent the population of the Asian tiger mosquito from increasing. The Commission will target their spraying for mosquito larvae in the designated zone using truck-mounted LV (Low Volume) machines. The Commission has notified municipal officials, health officers and police of these plans. The product being applied to control the mosquito larvae is the biological larvicide Bti (Bacillus theringiensis israelensis), which goes by the brand name VectoBac. VectoBac is registered for larval mosquito control by the US Environmental …

Middletown Fireman Home, Recovering

Monday morning's North Middletown fire needed to be fought from the exterior, due to dangerous indoor circumstances.

The firefighter who was injured in Monday morning's blaze in North Middletown has been released from the hospital and is home recovering. The firefighter, whose name has not been released, "was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon and is now home recuperating," Middletown Fire Department Spokesman John Isaksen said on Tuesday night. "It was a fall injury." The firefighter was injured during the fire at a Thompson Avenue home which gutted the house, rendered its occupants homeless and sent the firefighter to Jersey Shore University Medical center for treatment. The specifics on his injury were not disclosed. But, he is now doing fine, Isaksen said.  The fire burnt away the majority of the first story of the two-story home, which …
