Portion of the Sea Bright road from the foot of Rumson-Sea Bright to Highlands Bridge was cut off, due to washout and rock slides
The barriers at the foot of the Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge that closed off northern Ocean Avenue, from the bridge to Sandy Hook, for a few days have been taken down and the street is reopened. The NJ Department of Transportation has been working on a temporary and permanent fix for the state highway, Route 36, since Monday morning. And Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long has announced on her Facebook page that the road would be reopened at some point Monday afternoon. It has been cut off since the nor'easter last week. Because of the storms, the rocks that comprise the sea wall along Ocean Avenue have become dislodged. The result: sliding rocks and ocean water and sand seeping through the resulting gaping cavities. The $1.8 billion recently allocated for use in Community Development Block Grants, or CDBGs, will be used primarily to help residents and small businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy recover, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan said Thursday afternoon. Joined by Gov. Chris Christie in Sea Bright, Donovan said the funding is the first chunk of approximately $16 billion that will help homeowners along the East Coast rebuild, filling the gaps between aid provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and loans issued by the Small Business Administration (SBA). The schedule has been revised to keep the bridge open on weekends.
The official word is out on the schedule of the pending Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge closure. After review of the potential ill effects of Hurricane Sandy-recovering Sea Bright and myriad public objections raised, Monmouth County officials have revised the closure schedule for the upgrade the safety systems on the bridge, closing it on weekdays starting Jan. 28, but reopening it to accommodate weekend traffic, a county release said. “At the request of local businesses and the governing body, the county will has modified the closure schedule,” said freeholder Director Thomas A. Governor convenes Business Impact Assessment Group to survey merchants' needs after Sandy
Statewide business groups will begin this weekend to survey the needs of local merchants seeking to recover and rebuild after superstorm Sandy, Gov. Chris Christie said Friday afternoon. The formation of the Business Impact Assessment group was announced at a news conference at the Sea Bright firehouse, which until recently had served as a "Food City" center for provisions for the local responders and residents in this devastated oceanfront community. Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long addressed a crowd of hundreds at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School's Borden stadium today.
“We’re fine, but the business is gone. It’s all gone,” said a teary Christina Dilorio, part owner of Sea Bright’s now destroyed DIVE! Dilorio and partner Steve Graniero just opened the bar and grill last year. It was one of the many Sea Bright businesses, not to mention homes, destroyed by the unrelenting wrath of Hurricane Sandy. Dilorio was one of hundreds of Sea Bright business owners and residents who packed the Borden Stadium on Thursday afternoon to get a briefing on where to go from here from the borough’s Mayor Dina Long.
