Lt. Kevin Murphy of Hazlet, who died in a Sunday night crash near the Woodbridge exit of the Garden State Parkway, was a decorated police officer and Special Olympics organizer.
The driver who died Sunday night in a single car collision on the Garden State Parkway near Woodbridge was a police officer with the Port Authority who performed heroically during the September 11 terrorist attacks. Port Authority Police Lt. Kevin Murphy, a Hazlet resident, was killed when he lot control of his Honda Accord on the toll road, and the automobile swerved all over the roadway before stopping at the center median. Murphy, 55, was on his way to work at Newark Liberty International Airport when the accident occurred, at approximately 8:30 pm, a Port Authority spokesman said. Athletes and their family, friends, and supporters gathered at Long Branch High School on Saturday for the Special Olympics New Jersey Area VI Track and Field Meet. The event included some 300 participants from Aberdeen, Freehold, Hazlet, Holmdel, Howell, Lacey, Lakewood, Matawan, Middletown, and Point Pleasant, among other towns. Volunteers from New Jersey South East District Elks and the Jersey Shore Running Club assisted during the various running, relay and field events. The following was submitted by Joe McCarron, of the Navesink Hook & Ladder Fire Co. No.1: The members of Navesink Hook & Ladder Fire Co. No. 1 are trading their fire helmets for footballs in an effort to raise money for Special Olympics New Jersey. On March 4, the company will travel to MetLife Stadium, in the Meadowlands, for the 6th Annual New York Giants Snow Bowl Flag Football Tournament. The team will play in at least three games right on the field at the stadium. In order to be in the competition teams must raise at least $1600, but are encouraged to raise more. All funds go to Special Olympics New Jersey, a non-profit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports …

They were recongnized for their stellar teamwork and outstanding sportsmanship. Citing those exemplary attributes the Middletown Township Committee honored members of the township's 2011 Special Olympics Team last night, at the June 20 meeting. The governing body also thanked Tiffany Betz and Maura McCall, the team's co-coordinators and the many volunteers who support the team.
