A slideshow of the sites on a sunny day along Swimming River
Spring has sprung in Middletown and there were sure signs of the season sprouting up all over in the River Plaza section recently. The sun was bright and warm, birds were chirping and buds were in bloom. Boats at the River Plaza Marina looked poised and ready for winter shrink wrap removal. The scenery was serene. Take a look at some of the sights Patch captured in the above slideshow set to music. Enjoy and have a happy spring!

Spring has sprung; and, students at the Mother Teresa Regional School in Atlantic Highlands were out exploring some signs of the season recently. They crafted their own homemade binoculars and set out to see what they could see. Spotting some spring signs sprouting up all over was easy, given the good weather, school officials said. Most importantly, "It was so much fun," a student named Matthew said. After their seasonal exploration stint, the kids headed back into the class to discuss their findings and the significance of each. Take a look at the photos of the day above, provide by the school.

Maples signal the start of spring

The following column was written by Graelyn Brashear: Spring has sprung at the Jersey Shore, but unless you know where to look, you might not have noticed. Maple trees are some of the earliest plants to show off the inevitable result of longer days and warmer temperatures, putting forth their red, orange or yellow blooms well before the equinox signals the calendar spring. What it is: When we think of flowering trees, most of us probably picture cherries or dogwoods, whose petals are unmistakable signs that the season is in full swing. But all our deciduous trees have flowers. Some, like those of the maple and oak, are less showy than others, but hardly less important ecologically — they’re an important source of nectar in an otherwise …

While it felt like the rush of summer in the inland areas of Middletown on Monday, only the brave dared to go a bit more bare on Sandy Hook's shores. The water, still seasonably cold, picked up a steady breeze and knocked down the temperature by fifteen degrees. Parasailers sailed over the water and critters came out to catch a meal and romp. The sun glistened brightly, bouncing off the water. Even though there was a bayside chill in the air, it looked and played out like a beautiful spring day on the Hook! Spring is here, but only on the calendar, as Middletown residents awoke to a new swath of white stuff on their lawns. Following less than a week after near-record warmth, a snow storm is affecting Northern New Jersey and New York State, with some precipitation extending into central New Jersey. Temperatures are expected to move past freezing into the low ‘40s by afternoon, with remaining snow flurries changing over to rain. No precipitation has accumulated on driveways and sidewalks and no school delays or closures were necessary. The snow sighting was just a tease left over from a winter full of drifts and closures. The rain is expected to persist through the day, but there is a high probability of a changeover back into snow around …
