Week in News: Jersey Shore Mostly Ready for Memorial Day

News you may have missed from our neighbors in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Long Branch- The city has been working hard over the last few weeks to open as many access points as possible after Hurricane Sandy destroyed them and the city's boardwalk south of Pier Village. The boardwalk will not be repaired this summer, but could be rebuilt in time for the 2014 summer season, officials have said. The city's beaches are open on weekends starting Memorial Day up until the third weekend in June, when they will be open daily. The beach season closes on Labor Day. Week in News: Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker in Handcuffs

Clark- Around 6:30 p.m. Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, aka Internet celeb "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker," was arrested at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Philadelphia, by members of the Philadelphia Police Department, announced Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow. McGillvary has been charged with the homicide of Joseph Galfy, Jr., 73, which occurred in Clark on May 12. Read the entire timeline on Clark Patch. Week in News: Administrator Did Not Report Possible Sexual Abuse, Prosecutor Says

Wall- The former assistant superintendent of Wall Township Schools was indicted Monday morning on charges she failed to immediately report a possible sexual assault of a 4-year-old special needs student by a teacher and then lied to police and tried to cover up her inaction, according to the indictment. Read more on Wall Patch. Monmouth County- Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande has introduced a bill that would rein in the use of accrued sick days by retiring public employees. Week in News: High School Baseball Game Turns Into Brawl

Red Bank- A sixth-inning collision — during a tie game when a Red Bank Regional player running from third base collided with the Rumson-Fair Haven catcher — cleared both benches and ended up with all brawling players possibly suspended from upcoming games and the arrest of a Rumson parent for alleged simple assault,according to APP.com. Week in News: Jury Finds DiGilio Not Guilty

Brick- A jury has found Brick resident Anthony DiGilio not guilty of vehicular homicide and assault by vessel in connection with a fatal Aug. 3, 2008 boating accident. The 1 a.m. accident rocked the Jersey Shore boating community and a subsequent investigation led to charges being brought against DiGilio, who was at the helm of a 27-foot Imperial performance boat when the accident occurred in the area where the Metedeconk River converges with Barnegat Bay in Brick. Belmar- Belmar is hoping to get on Prince Harry's itinerary for a stateside tour the royal has planned in May.  The Prince of Wales has planned a May stop, touring Hurricane-Sandy impacted areas of New Jersey and New York. Middletown- A man who formerly lived in Port Monmouth pleaded guilty today to leading a narcotics network that was responsible for the largest indoor marijuana growing operation ever shut down by police in New Jersey, the state attorney general's office announced. Week in News: Paraplegic Struggles to Rebuild After Sandy

News you may have missed this week in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Toms River- With the help of his father, Eric Katz spent over three years renovating the house that allowed him to live how he wanted. The 30 year-old paraplegic has been in a wheelchair since age 15, but that never stopped him from living an active and independent life. Then Superstorm Sandy struck. Week in News: Massive Sandy Fire Caught on Tape

Brick- The fire that destroyed the Camp Osborn neighborhood during Superstorm Sandy was captured in an up-close video and uploaded to YouTube by way of a Mexican news site Oct. 31, 2012, but the video has only recently surfaced locally.
