Toms River- A meeting by a grassroots organization dedicated to opposing the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) flood maps was shut down by Toms River police Saturday after being overwhelmed by large crowds. The group, Stop FEMA Now, is hoping its unified voice will reach elected officials and encourage them to speak out against FEMA's Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps, which were recently adopted by the State. If the maps aren't changed, thousands of residents along New Jersey's coasts will be required to elevate their homes or face potentially financially-crippling flood insurance premiums in the years go come. Brick- Officials in Brick Township and Mantoloking Borough are both hoping their residents sign easements allowing for an Army Corps of Engineers dune project that will shore up the oceanfront and, hopefully, prevent breaches like the one that occurred near the Mantoloking Bridge during Superstorm Sandy. That breach, which led to a 20 foot-deep inlet forming between the ocean and the base of the county-owned bridge across Barnegat Bay, is largely blamed for the resulting floods in mainland neighborhoods such as Shore Acres and Baywood in Brick Township. Lacey- A Forked River man lost a portion of his ear after a fight erupted in the parking lot of the Forked River House early Saturday morning, police said. Long Branch- A Long Branch High School student has been charged with invasion of privacy for allegedly videotaping a female student who was getting undressed in the school's locker room. People who are without a permanent residence, or at risk of becoming homeless, are invited to participate in Monmouth County’s 2013 Project Homeless Connect event at three locations on Wednesday, Jan. 30. A team of volunteers and county staff will be in Asbury Park, Freehold and Red Bank to meet with people and encourage them to seek county services and resources. Those who participate will be asked to provide information and will be offered food, clothing and various services, including free health screenings and employment services. Long Branch- A man has been struck and killed by a train near Branchport Avenue in Long Branch on Monday afternoon. Long Branch Police Capt. Lakewood- One person was hospitalized after a shooting reportedly took place at the Best Western on Route 70 in Lakewood, according to Lakewood police. The victim, whom police declined to identify, suffered "non-life-threatening injuries," according to police. The victim was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.
