ReplyPhoto opp for Christie, more attention to the boardwalk than to people who still can't afford to elevate houses and can't afford exorbitant premiums if they don't raise them. Almost 7 months later, people are still homeless and FEMA can't get its act together.

ReplyAnd the lack of dunes allowed the ocean to breach the barrier island, flood the bay and flood mainland homes. Somebody PLEASE build dunes! Use eminent domain to get easements to build dunes -- for the safety of the public and tens of thousands of homes.
The selfish oceanfront hold-outs can elevate their houses to see over them and keep their precious views. With adequate dunes, the rest of us will have slightly lower flood insurance rates, and maybe FEMA will wake up and realize those extra-high, extra-expensive house-raising heights aren't necessary.

ReplyNJ has 10,000 houses to sell England, because we can't afford to raise them and we can't afford the huge insurance premiums for the rest of our lives. ---

ReplyEvery little fire district in every town has fire "commissioners" who run for semi-secret election in Feb. and get PAID from our property taxes. They vote for million-dollar fire engines and other eqpt. because "they know what's best" for taxpayers.

Reply"He is trying to halt flood insurance rate hikes" = That's it in a nut-shell. If they're not affordable, they can't be imposed on us. Who can oppose that except rural Wyoming politicians with no flood zones in their districts?

Well said, Squan! An affordability analysis will kill the exorbitant rip-off rates FEMA wants. Thanks, Menendez.

Ultra-conservative cost-cutters forced this bad compromise, or there would be no flood insurance at all. Dems had to go along with their strong-arm tactics or all Shore property sales would have stopped without insurance.
It's time for the rational members of Congress to un-do the Biggert-Waters Act.

I'm a Realtor and had to get a flood elevation certificate for a house I sold in Holiday City (Bimini Dr. area oiff Rt. 37) -- several miles inland from the bay. It seems the antiquated flood zone maps were based on cranberry bogs that were there decades before the development was built! FEMA is FUBAR!

25% of US is under FEMA's thumb now as its expands flood zones, raises rates to bail out its Katrina debt. The other 75% will be hit whenever there's a tornado, earthquake, wildfire, etc. FEMA is the disaster after every disaster. That's why Congress must "StopFemaNow.com."
